Student Homecoming Intern Position Descriptions 2009-2010

All interns are responsible for the following:

  • Ability to disaffiliate from any student organization, Greek Chapter, or Residence Hall.
  • Be present at as many events/activities during the week of Homecoming as possible (class schedule permitting).
  • Recruit, select, train, and maintain a committee of volunteer coordinators to assist with all tasks. Delegate responsibilities to committee members and provide guidance and leadership to ensure the completion of tasks.
  • Help promote Homecoming 2010 to University constituents.
  • Hold regularly scheduled meetings with student and alumni organizations, Greek Community, Residence Life to inform them about Homecoming competitions and events.
  • Plan and attend Homecoming Intern Retreat on Saturday, January 23, 2010.
  • Shadow current Homecoming Interns during Homecoming 2009.
  • Assist with designing logo, artwork, and website format with Student Unions & Activities Marketing department.
  • Collaborate as an intern team and with external partners to plan and execute the spring Homecoming 5k run/walk.
  • Meet weekly as an intern group at 3:30pm-5:00pm on Wednesday afternoons during the academic year.

Intern Positions

Student Activities and Competitions Intern

  • Coordinate student competitions during the week of Homecoming including: the Cheer Competition, Lip Sync, Flag Football, Campus-Wide Scavenger Hunt and any other sports competition.
  • Determine awards, scoring, and judging for all necessary events, update sport rules, and ensure the alignment of brackets for all games. Collaborate with Student Activities and Royalty/Coronation Intern to incorporate scoring for royalty.
  • Develop clear, concise judging standards for the competitions.
  • Design, update, maintain and implement the Homecoming Registration and Rulebook packet.
  • Monitor registration and check-in process for competitions.
  • Confirm membership in organization & registered student events for competitions.
  • Keep a running tally of all scores and placing for all Homecoming competitions and for all participating constituents. Communicate competition status to constituents.
  • Work with University facilities and venues to reserve space for events.
  • Work closely with Marketing and Publicity Intern to promote events.
  • Secure officials, score keepers, EMT/Medical crews, and judges for competitions as appropriate.
  • Order and arrange all awards and trophies for Homecoming competitions.
  • Superb planning and organization skills, strong interpersonal communication skills, and creativity are required.

Student Activities and Royalty/Coronation Intern

  • Plan and implement the following traditional events: Homecoming Kick-Off, Gopher Fest, Comedian/Concert, and Pep Fest. Incorporate new traditions, if necessary.
  • Create a standardized scoring sheet for all events and competitions.
  • Recruit and select judges for royalty competitions.
  • Develop clear, concise judging standards for the royalty competition.
  • Work with U of M athletics to ensure representation at the Pep Fest.
  • Collaborate with Student Activities and Competitions Intern to update the Homecoming Registration and Rulebook packet.
  • Organize selection process of Royalty Candidates.
  • Responsible for planning and implementing all events for Royalty candidates.
  • Obtain judges for royalty competition(s).
  • Maintain consistent communication with each Royalty candidate and judges.
  • Ensure Royalty involvement at Pep Fest, Kick-Off Events, and other Homecoming Pride and Spirit events.
  • Responsible for obtaining sashes, flowers, crowns, and gifts for candidates and judges.
  • Superb planning and organization skills, strong interpersonal communication skills, and creativity are required.

Parade Intern

  • Contact community organizations, local businesses, and University departments regarding participation in the Homecoming Parade.
  • Coordinate efforts with Marketing & Publicity Intern to have students participate in the parade.
  • Work with Staff Homecoming Coordinator and parade technical committee to define and organize entire structure of the parade, including: route, police assistance, crowd control, line up, etc.
  • Work with Marketing & Publicity Intern to organize online registration.
  • Maintain excel spreadsheet with parade registrant information.
  • Determine order of parade entries.
  • Work with SUA staff to collect and submit payment for parade entrants.
  • Communicate all information to parade entrants, including dignitaries and special guests.
  • Work closely with Student Activities and Competitions Intern to determine scoring/judging of house fronts and/or floats.
  • Attend parade technical committee meetings to ensure a safe and secure parade.
  • Work closely with the Office of Risk Management to ensure safe house fronts.
  • Create a fee structure for entries not affiliated with the University of Minnesota.
  • Update and/or order magnetic signs for the dignitaries and Grand Marshal vehicles.
  • Help secure vehicles for the dignitaries and Grand Marshal(s).
  • Attention to detail, understanding of an overall picture, ability to work independently, and excellent follow through are required.

Public Engagement Intern

  • Implement and Coordinate the Ultimate Volunteer Experience, incorporating campus community and the state of Minnesota.
  • Identify an organization(s) to donate philanthropic efforts.
  • Contact organization for a detailed description of the organization’s specifications for donations.
  • Collaborate with other University Departments and students to promote the philanthropic event.
  • Encourage University Departments to participate in philanthropic events during Homecoming.
  • Work with the Marketing & Publicity Intern and SUA Staff to create a press release about the philanthropic event.
  • Work closely with the Office of Student Affairs Community Relations office to enhance community support and engage local communities in philanthropic efforts.
  • Superb planning and organization skills, strong interpersonal communication skills, and creativity are required.

Marketing and Publicity Intern

  • Work with SUA Staff to develop a distribution plan of marketing materials and promotion activities for Homecoming including mailers, print advertisements, and other promo items (T-shirts, buttons, etc).
  • Devise a marketing and communications plan to increase the participation of organizations in competitions, attendance at events, participation of unaffiliated students, and the participation of Residence Hall Students, Student Organizations and Greek Chapters.
  • Oversee external relations with student and alumni organizations including the Greek Community, Residence Life, Intercollegiate Athletics, and Academic Affairs.
  • Stay informed on homecoming-related events to assist with internal and external communication and publicity.
  • Brainstorm new ways to publicize the events.
  • Serve as Chief Liaison between SUA, Marketing and Design Office, and Homecoming committee.
  • Conduct focus group to gauge student ideas & feedback for Homecoming events.
  • Assist with developing assessment tools to gauge success and make recommendations for future committees.
  • Meet with SUA-Marketing for media training and serve as spokesperson for Homecoming.
  • Serve as main coordinator for Homecoming blog and develop content and posting schedule.
  • Lead volunteer (Homecoming Ambassador) recruitment efforts and serve as key point of contact for volunteers
  • Understanding of the diversity within and throughout student groups and the role they have on campus is required. Must have the ability to set goals, problem solve, and pay attention to details. Strong communications skills, logistical skills, determination and commitment are required.
